Microsoft has licensed Adobe Flash Lite and Reader software allowing future versions of Windows Mobile to offer support for Flash.

With this license in place, it will allow Windows Mobile owners to see Flash animations using the mobile version of Internet Explorer. Not only does this best other players in the space such as Opera, it allows Microsoft to one-up Apple. To date, Apple has snubbed Adobe refusing to license Flash Lite for the iPhone. Steve Jobs was recently quoted as saying neither version is good enough for the iPhone.

For Microsoft, support of Flash will help it's positioning on Windows Mobile devices. Motorola even decided to use Opera on its Windows Mobile based Moto Q9h. With Flash support, Microsoft should have an easier time getting manufacturers to set IE as the default browser on their devices.

Microsoft did not provide details on when Flash support is expected to make its way onto devices.
