
Using the Moto Q Phone Features
There are a number of ways to initiate a phone call on your Moto Q.
Press Contacts (right soft key) and select the person or company you’d like to call. Press the green button to initiate the call. From the Home Screen, press the green button to bring up a list of recently dialed numbers. Using the 5-way navigator, select the number and press the green dial button.

Maximizing The Battery Life
To maximize battery life on your Moto Q, do the following: Disable Incoming Beams: Press Start > Settings > Connections > Uncheck “Receive Incoming Beams” Turn-off Bluetooth when not in use: Press Start > Bluetooth > Bluetooth Manager > Settings > Toggle Right to Bluetooth Off Dim Screen Using Candlelight: Download the program Candlelight from our free software downloads section and install on your Q. Kill Tasks: As you open and close programs, they continue to run in the background which can affect your battery life. From the Home Screen, press Start (left soft button) > System Tools > Task Manager > Menu (right soft button) > Kill All Consider purchasing an extended battery. A word of caution, some cases will not fit the Moto Q with extended battery, since the extended battery changes the physical dimensions of the Moto Q.
Adding a Bluetooth headset or device
To use a Bluetooth headset with your Moto Q, you first need to “pair” the Moto Q with the headset. This enables your Moto Q to communicate with the headset. Follow these directions to “pair” a Bluetooth headset with your Moto Q smartphone: <ol> Press Start > Bluetooth Manager > A. Hands Free (you will be prompted to turn on Bluetooth if it is disabled) Press Menu > Add (Check the directions that came with your headset and put it in “discoverable mode”.) Press Search You willl be prompted to enter a passkey to confirm you would like to add the Bluetooth headset. This is usually 0000. Enter 0000 Quick Access To Main Functions The Moto Q keyboard allows you to easily access main functions including email, camera and speakerphone. Access email by selecting the key to the left of 0 Access the camera by selecting the key to the right of the spacebar. This will also put you in the Pictures and Video application as all three are integrated. Turn on speakerphone by selecting the key at the bottom right of the keyboard

Turn Off Screen
The Moto Q does not have a traditional power button. The red button simply ends a call. Holding this button completely shuts down the Q and your wireless service. To turn off the screen, press and hold the key left of 0 (same key used to access your email). This can also improve your battery life.

Flight Mode For owners of the Sprint Moto Q or Verizon Moto Q owners with the MOL2 uppgrade, do the following to enter “flight mode” or turn off the wireless portion of your smartphone. <ol> Press and hold the Home button Select Option B for Wireless Manager Scroll to Phone and press the center of the 5-way nav To turn your phone service back on, simply repeat these steps
Keyboard Lock
To avoid your phone from making random calls, you can lock the keyboard. <ol> Press and hold the Home button Select C. Key Lock You should now notice the left soft button says, “Unlock”. To unlock your keyboard, press the left soft button, followed by the “*” symbol. There is no need to hit shift.
You can also lock the keyboard by just pressing the Home key followed by the space bar. Moto Q and Mac Users The Moto Q comes with Microsoft ActiceSync and this is not compatible with the Mac platform. In order to sync your Moto Q with your Macintosh, you will need a third party application called Missing Sync for Windows Mobile. You should also read the article Motorola Q and the Mac. You'll find even more information in our Mac and Motorola Q forums. Despite it's lack of support out of the box, the Moto Q is still a great smartphone for Mac users.

Free Software The Moto Q runs Windows Mobile 5 smartphone operating system. As such, there are a number of free software applications and utilities for the Moto Q. As with any operating system, buggy software can lead to an unstable OS or in this case unstable smartphone. Use caution when installing third party software. Everything Q offers a large selection of free software titles for the Moto Q. To download titles, you simply need to be a member of our community. Registration is free.

Customize Your Home Screen
To personalize your Q, you might want to consider customizing your Home Screen. A designer has created a number of wallpapers and home screens that are available for download in our free software section

These designs are free, but I encourage you to donate to the author if you find them useful. Follow these steps to personalize your Home Screen Layout:
Download both the .home.xml and wallpaper image. Place both files in /Application/Data/Home folder on your Moto Q. Press Home > Settings > D. Home Screen Using the 5-way navigator, scroll right to select your new home screen layout Scroll down to Background Image > Using the 5-way navigator, scroll right to select the appropriate Background Image or Wallpaper for your new Home Screen. Press Done. Press the Home button and you should now see your new Home Screen.

This allows you to get a custom home screen that displays the weather, tasks and more. Popular programs that are used to create an advanced home screen layout include Facade, Fizz Weather.

Customizing Your Ringtones
The Moto Q can use MP3’s as ringtones. It does not support ringtone services offered by Verizon. However, you can create your own ringtones for free or use ringtones you find on the web. For example, download this ringtone used in the movie "Crank".

Place the file in \Application Data\Sounds Press Home > Settings > B. Sounds Scroll right to select your new ringtone </ol>From here you can also set your alerts for Reminders, New e-mail or New text message. As a reminder, it’s likely that your existing MP3’s are very large and not made to be ringtones. You’ll want to consider editing the file QuickTime Pro or one of the other audio editing options available online.
Accessing the Web
The Moto Q requires a data package from your wireless provider in order to access the web. The Moto Q comes with Internet Explorer. Press Start > Internet Explorer to browse the web. The Moto Q allows for full web access, not WAP access found on regular cellphones. However, some sites are not designed to provide a better mobile web experience. When visiting http://www.everythingwm.com from your Moto Q, the site will automatically present a Q friendly version of our website allowing to read news and participate in our Motorola Q forums.

During automatic setup all the necessary settings for the ISP is downloaded from the network. A few popular ISPs with automatic settings include:

Please gather the following information from your POP3/IMAP provider:
Your username, password, and any special security requirements
Note: For these instructions, “LSK” refers to the Left Soft Key; “RSK” refers to the Right Soft Key on your Motorola Q.</p> <ol> Press Start, locate the Messaging Icon. Move cursor over Messaging Icon and select. Select B. Outlook Email Press Menu Select Options Select New Account Input your name (as they want it to appear to any email recipients). Press the down arrow key when complete. Input your email address. Press the down arrow key when complete. Select the “Attempt to obtain email settings from the Internet.” check box. Press the Next button. (RSK) Allow the device to obtain the settings. There should be a success message when the process is complete: “Success. Auto obtained settings for yourprovider.com”. Select Next (RSK) In the User Name field, input your login. Press the down arrow. Input the password for the account in the Password field. If a domain exists for the account, it will be automatically populated. Note: For most POP3/IMAP4 account, a domain is not necessary. Select the check box to save the password. Press the Next (RSK) All fields on this screen will be automatically populated. Press Next (RSK) All fields on this screen are automatically populated. Press Next (RSK) Choose how many days worth of email you would like to receive. Use the left/right arrows to make selection. Choose the initial size of each email you would like to receive. Use the left/right arrows to make selection. Press Next (RSK) Select how often you would like the device to automatically synchronize with this email account. Note: If you plan to sync another email account via ActiveSync using a scheduled sync, the POP3/IMAP4 account should not be set to sync on a schedule. If the POP3 account is set to sync on a schedule, it will disrupt the ActiveSync scheduled sync. Press Next (RSK) Press Finish (RSK) If you would like to download the email from the account press Yes (LSK). Press No (RSK) if you do not want to download the email from your account. Note: To delete an email account, From Home Screen > Start Menu > Messaging. Select the Account you want to delete (e.g. Yahoo!). Press Menu > Options > Account Options. Highlight the account you want to delete. Press Menu and select Delete.
