does anyone have any specific instructions or am i just stupid?
Let's start by clarifying what format you are converting the DVDs to, and then what player you are trying to use to view the video on your Q???

DVDFab Platinum is a decent all-in-one/overall program, but has been known to be unstable at times. Not on all updates, but there is significant bugs reported on their main forum at CDFreaks.
I personally also had used it and found that at times, especially after a major update, there are issues with the ouput stalling a points and the program itself kinda choking to a freeze occasionally. I just didn't like using it and finding out afterwards that there were slight bugs with the output.

In all fairness though, I mainly trialed it for DVD backups and it was early 2007, so maybe they ironed out their issues, although the posts at CDFreaks still seems to have posts aout issues..

But doesn't hurt to try it out for yourself, has a 30 day trial period...

I'm gathering that you mean 'Can you compress a full 7.8 GB DVD down to a 700 MB AVI??'
Yes you can, but you have to remember that the larger the output size, the higher the videos' bitrate, and thus the better the videos' quality. It's basically up to you. I prefer to leave my files at around 900 to 1000 MBs.

However...If your video is in AVI format already why would you need to convert them??

Great to hear..... PocketDivxEncoder is pretty good for a free app. I think you will be satsfied with it's AVI output.

The first one I just did was 173MB!!! I haven't seen it yet on the Q, but it's good quality on the computer - just small (as it should be).

If you went from 7.5 Gigs down to 173 MBs, you must be very accepting of quality levels...lol

I just prefer A Bit more of a final size mainly because I like to zoom in about 20%. I also prefer MPG4s over AVIs unless I am using the Xvid codec. But I still have PocketDivxEncoder because it's still a great freeware...

(Shhh...this is between you and me: the screen is 320x240 - not an HD 70inch flatscreen.)

    LMAO...

All the more reason to get A Bit more detail on that itsy, bitsy screen...

But ultimately... Whatever floats 'your' boat...

I just used PocketDivxEncoder to compress a movie down to 176 MBs as d_cushman stated and I'm sorry but it was horrible to look at even on a tiny screen. I doubt I would even go that low with 1Click DVDtoIPOD, which produces a far superior quality output.
The only program that could still produce a crisp enough video at that low of a bitrate would be AutoGK using the Xvid codec as I mentioned already... It's just too bad I haven't figured out the right framerate or buffering settings to get the AutoGK AVIs to play smoothly on TCPMP yet...
