    Only way that works. fill the 3 gallon jug up, poor into 5 gallon. fill 3 gallon up again, poor into 5 gallon. that leave you 1 gallon in the three. dump the 5 gallon out. poor the 1 gallon from the three into the 5 gallon. fill the 3 gallon jug up and dump into the 5 gallon. 1+3=4.

    Each line essentially "reads" the line above it

    11
    21 = two 1's, (the line above)
    1211 = one 2, one 1
    111221 = one 1, one 2, two 1's
    312211 = three 1's, two 2's, one 1
    13112221 = one 3, one 1, two 2's, two 1's

    etc.
