    re lockup

Well, I have my replacement Q now for a few weeks and the problem is only marginally better. I am not getting the lockups during the phone call anymore. What I continue to get is if the phone is idle for an extended period of time, it just goes black, and will not come back on unless I take the battery out and put it back in. This seems to happen more in areas where I have little or no coverage.

I think this has very little to do with the the Q, and very much to do with Windows Mobile 5.0. It just blows my mind, that this many complaints about it have occured, and this thing made it out of QA!

So now what.... I really like the phone, and do not want to trade it in on another one. So do I live with it, and hope for an update to windows mobile? Thats probably what I am going to do.

candria77: I have the exact same problem as you. Leaving the phone alone and letting to sleep will put it into sleep and not wake up. Cant turn it on unless I reseat the battery. REALLY annoying. NOt only do i miss all my calls, I do not notice it unless I check my phone only to find it dead. I dont know how to solve that problem either. However, this is not the end of it.

If it doesnt freeze up with a blank screen, it would stay alive, BUT I cannot recieve calls, sms, email. The battery meter also does not update.... Again, if I power it off, I cannot power it back on unless I reseat the battery. UBER annoyance.

Funny thing is that no application would cause it to freeze, it only freezes when its left alone >.<

Something that I have tried to solve the problem is to set the display timeout (not backlight) to Never. I honestly cannot say that works for sure but it seems to help. Prepare to bring your charger wherever you go...

Another problem is that the Q does not save my ringtones for whatever reason. I set all my ringtones and sounds, use it for bit, Exclamation and Question sound is set back to "Ding". Another minor annoyance >.>

can anyone shed some light about these issues?

Re. it only freezes when its left alone..."

I found a problem with the keyboard lock key sequence where if I manualy lock the KB and leave it locked for about an hour the phone locks up i.e. no response from the KB, and I have to pop the battery. If I lock/unlock more frequently I don't have this problem. So now I don't manually lock the KB anymore.

    Done with the Q

I ended up trading this thing for a Razr.... I miss the email notification. But the bottom line is this...

The Q may be a stylish phone, but Window mobile is a piece of junk....

Apple needs to make a smart phone, they would get it right....

Yeah, I have to admit I was a whisker away from doing the same thing. I went through 3 Q phones, on the third one they had me download the major upgrade that MS came out with a couple of weeks ago and that got munged so they sent me another phone with the upgrade installed at the factory. This one worked except for the KB lockup problem. Prior to investigating and discovering the manual kb locking thing I had called them yet again saying it was still locked up every time I took it out of my pocket so they sent me a FREE Treo700p, they gave me the choice of either the P or W, I chose P at the time for obvious reasons.

I must admit though, when I received the 700, even though it was a bit less bulky than my old 650, it was heavy, had an external antennae (can't put it back in my front pants pocket upside down, which is the normal position it ends up in if you don't want to flip it around, which has caused me to drop the phone in the past)...and it still felt like I was holding a brick up to my head.

Ever since I quit locking the kb I haven't had any problems, and I use it for long calls, wireless email (not push I use manual send/receive), web etc. I really like the ability to sync with outlook and even though I also have a broadband card for my laptop I end up using the Q allot since it's "instant on"

Battery life on the standard battery does stink, but when you can buy extended batteries for $20 online from Verizon (I have 3 now...) it becomes a non-issue. I actually like the extended battery better because it gives me a little more to hang onto (it's almost too thin), and an index of the phone position when I remove it from my pocket if it's shifted sideways.

Software still needs some work though and I have yet to install a third party app that worked, even though they claim the latest versions are Q compatible, and I've tried quite a few.

We early adoptors always suffer through these sorts of problems in the beginning to gain the benefits so we're used to it. If you're not a high tech person i.e. you're not comfortable with editting registry settings on a PC then you're probably better off with the razr. I had to do this after installing ActiveSync 4.2, the only one that works with the Q, since MS had set the "Client Only" registry key to a value of "1" or yes so I couldn't sync at first. Changing it to a "0" fixed that problem. It took me a few hours of troubleshooting, we all know the routine...hard reset etc. etc. etc. until Verizon finally put me through to a 4th level support person who fixed it literally in 3 minutes over the phone.

Now I love it, especially with my H700 earbud which I use all time. Plus with my new every two it was only $100.

The only thing missing is an external battery charger that works without having to install the battery in the phone...

hehe, I forgot to mention that it was not even on keypad lock mode when it freezes up when its left alone. How come I dont lock the keypad up? because it freezes the thing >.>

anyway, after a few days of playing around with it, with some god know whatever settings i changed on it, its been freezing up a LOT less. If anybody wants my settings, I can list them out in a reply post.

Also, leaving it plugged in will not freeze it for whatever reason >.< I dont know if its whether its windows fault of moto's fault =/

    settings

please do share your setting changes. my q has crashed as a lot of users on this and another thread have described--after initially freezing and being able to unfreeze by battery popping, it's now permanently frozen on the verizon wireless screen and i'm awaiting a replacement phone. i gather from this forum that i'll probably have similar problems with my new q, and want to be prepared!
is there any way to save files from the phone or any backup apps besides outlook, btw? i only have outlook express which doesn't apparently work, so i've lost tons of calendar entries and photos. i wanted a smartphone for the pda capabilities, but if i lose them every couple of months when the phone fails, there's not much point....

    Update Q Software (OS)?

I experienced many of the same problems all of you are describing. My Q (purchased in mid June) was progressively getting worse each week. It would even crash upon answering a call - no bluetooth - just an 'old fashioned' call. Finally, I successfully (whew!) updated the Q software as a last desperate move about 2 weeks ago. Since then my Q has been nearly flawless! One crash when my area received EVDO 2 days ago.

With the updated software and EVDO, I'm loving this Q. Try updating the software - worst case you 'brick' your Q and Verizon sends you a new one. Best case, you're lov'ng your Q!

    Motorola freeze

I've had the same problem several times. It's almost a daily occurance I'm pulling the battery out to reset. I've downloaded the software upgrade but that didn't seem to help the problem. I've actually had an issue with receiving calls at times. It seems to happen when the battery says fully charged but after the reset, it registers dead. It's very frustrating. Any suggestions from anyone? Returning it to Verizon isn't an option as I didn't get it from Verizon.

hey.. sorry for such a late reply.

What seem to work for me to stop the Q from blanking out and dying is to set the display time out to "never"

settings -> Power Management -> Display timeout to "never"

on other news... I GOT JAPANESE OUTPUT WORKING ON THE Q ;D

My Q would freeze up periodically and when I would turn it off to restart it it would not turn back on. I would have to do this 3 or 4 times a day so I called Verizon about the problem and they are sending me a new phone fedex next day. Their customer service is great so give that a try.

    Freeze ups

Got mine in December, constantly froze up, holding the off button would not power it down...only way is to take out the battery. Ran the update download, no help.

Exchanged the phone for a new one, ran the update, still have same problems. Very aggravating, ready to toss it under a passing truck...how, in this day and time, can someone put a piece of crap like this out on the market...I was happy with my LG flip phone, but the boss wanted us to have these...

    Removing the batterry to reset.

I am having the same problem. I have to pull the toughskin off the phone, remove and then re-insert the battery to get it to boot up sometimes. I have had it 3 weeks. I Verizon pretty cool about exchanging new phones? Should I shell out the extra dough for the black one? People seem to have better luck with battery power on the black one. I am not into jerking with this thing to make it work. This is my first idiot phone. I expected it to be stable.
Take it back? I like the phone for the most part. The toughskin is working well. Will Verizon give me a new that day?

    thanks.

I guess I have one of those "anomalies" from the factory. Normal battery gives me about 3 days (including watching Smokin' Aces and listening to music on the way to work) Never had my Q freeze, never had any of these "sticky" P keys....LOL

Maybe we should stop beating around the bush and start a thread for "Does your Q spaz out after surfing porn for hours?"

The newer phones have the same issue

Now April 2007 the Q's continue with the same problem. I'm on my second Q from Verizon and its the same problem, I have to remove the battery 5+++ times a day. I live in Miami and Varizon's signal have decrease in quality since I started using them over 2 years ago, may be that's is the issue
