My Q's keyboard is possessed... help! I got my Q in December. Things were fine for the first couple weeks, but then I started having problems with the keyboard. Especially when the phone has been on all day, the keyboard freaks out. It's as simple as this: I CLEANLY press "r", and on the screen, it types "r9x4" (or something like that). Then you go to delete "9x4", and the second time you hit the delete key, it types "uwv". Same thing with the navigation buttons. I'll be navigating through a text message, and all of a sudden it hits the send button by itself. This is unbelievably frustrating. This is NOT a case of me being clumsy and hitting multiple buttons; the characters that are typed are NOWHERE NEAR the letters I press. There is something legitimately wrong with the phone. It got so frustrating last weekend that I kept restarting the phone (which often helps), but it had no effect. As you can imagine, entering in a password is phenomenally difficult when this is happening. It took me 30 minutes to unlock the phone. I'm a moron for not returning it right away, and I'm sure I'm out of warranty now. Any advice? I've searched a lot, but can't find anyone having the same problem (though finding appropriate search terms has been incredibly complicated). I'm going to take it to Verizon today to see what they have to say. My NE2 doesn't kick in for another year. I'm sure they'll tell me tough luck, but I'm highly frustrated, and have to try. Ugh.
Did you take it back to Verizon per your post? You shouldn't be too late - you have a year. My customer service at Verizon was excellent - when I started having problems and getting replacements sort of tolled the year. The recurring problems after that year was over were treated the same as if I were in the year. If you havne't done it yet definitely bring it in. I'm interested to hear what they said! I've noticed on my old phone the D was hard to depress, and on this one the E is hard to get entered. Nothing like what you described, though, and a simple press of that key more firmly does the trick!
I took it back yesterday, and they said they'd replace it for $50... if I could reproduce the problem. Which of course I couldn't. Terribly, terribly frustrating. I think next time it starts (reliably) acting up, I'm going to drop whatever I'm doing and take it to the store. But this is definitely good news! I hope this thread can at least help anyone out who's having the same problem as me. Though finding the right search terms for "keyboard is possessed" can be tricky...
Umm - that's not the way it SHOULD have been handled, nor is it the way mine was handled. Call Verizon customer support & ask for WDTS - wireless data technical support. Explain your problem, that you cannot afford this to continue sporadically happening, and that you can't go without a phone. They should mail you a replacement. Check out the website to find the phone number to call dependant upon the state you're in - but make sure to ask for WDTS. They'll connect you. http://www22.verizon.com/CustomerSupport/ContactUs/Index/?ID=CS
Update: Took it to another VZW, and they swapped it right out, they didn't even make me reproduce the problem. So now I'm struggling with my new Q. I backed everything up with Sprite Backup, but now I can't get it working, as this apparently has a new firmware version. Frustrating. At least I've got a new Q! Thanks for all the help!
Although this may not be the problem you are experiencing, it might be worth a shot to go into the "Text Input Settings" and mark the "Clear Contents" checkbox and select "Done". Or maybe better is to turn "Text Prediction" off completely and see if this changes anything.
I took my phone in yesterday with that problem.. the Verizon girl told me that it's a software issue and that I needed to go out to Verizon's site and do the software upgrade to the OS of the phone. I was having the problem using txt messaging and Docs to Go. I haven't tried it yet, but that was her solution.. she said some other model of LG had the same kind of problem. She wasn't really interested in replacing the phone or anything like that. I've also encountered where restarting and pulling the battery does not help. Edit: I would also recommend backing up the phone to your PC via Active Sync first.. the girl was unclear whether or not the update would blow the phone away, so I'd rather not chance it.
My problem definitely had nothing to do with software (hard reset did nothing to fix the problem). It was definitely a hardware issue. I would STRONGLY reccomend to anyone to bring it back to a VZW and have it replaced. If it's w/in a year, it should be free, and they shouldn't give you any guff. Trust me, you can't fix this problem except by getting a new phone. Do it before it's too late! I am THRILLED with my new phone, it has no hint of this problem whatsoever. I've fallen in love with the phone again (now that it works properly).
Did you send it to motorola? I cancled my sprint warrenty because the motorola warrenty covered more and was free to replace a broken phone. If you did send it to motorola, how long did it take for them to send you a new one?
I hate to say it but you are SOL on this one... the only way you can backup your phone and install on a different phone with a different firmware is via the "upgrade" mode in sprite backup and follow the lengthy procedure.
Just be sure to copy the PIM.VOL file in your phones root directory. You will have to put all your software on but you still have all your contacts and calander dates.
No, I took it straight to a VZW store. They were willing to replace it even though I couldn't reproduce the problem for them.
definitely a hardware problem My Q has been randomly generating oddball text periodically on the screen for nearly a year now...since just after it went out of warranty. It's clearly a hardware problem, and I'm speculating that it's a loose connection between the keyboard and the circuit board. More details: --the problem first came up when I was out at the beach. I didn't drop the phone, but I'm suspicious a grain or two of sand crept inside the phone. --the problem may have also resulted from keeping the phone in a tight(ish) pants pocket -- something may have gotten flexed or tweaked. --when the phone is acting up, the backlight on the keyboard is also affected. If you use the phone in a dark room, you can see that the keyboard backlight flickers, glows at half-brightness, or goes off, and the buzzing sounds different. Press an affected key, and the backlight will temporarily dim, then the odd letters will be generated on the screen, then the backlight goes back on. It's as though something is short-circuiting the backlight circuit, and this short is interpreted by the phone as a series of keystrokes. Its always the same, too....when mine is affected, it thinks "s" is "ozfrs". It also thinks the "home" key is equivalent to "4" and "send", so if I hit the "home" key (to lock my keypad), it dials 4 instead. If I hit "down" on the keypad, it interprets it as an "8" and a send. Very frustrating. The fix? For me, I go to a dim room and mash the bottom right corner of the keyboard, sometimes including the keys, sometimes just the corner below the keyboard, until the blue backlight glows properly, which means the short circuit has resolved itself, and I'm usually good for a couple of months, until I slip it into a tight pocket again or maybe get some more crud inside the case. Kind of a pain, but I'm trying to make it until my contract is up.... --for me, fixing the phone comes down
