The whole back cover is black rubberized. Front panel is a glossy black hard plastic, but seems durable. Keyboard area is a bit different texture, black but not glossy.

The keyboard is "semi-matte," where it's shiny but has a very slight roughness to them.

I've owned both and currently use the q9c. Here is what I found better:

    -more stable
-wm6.1 is better (so many aspects to list)
-battery life is better (my q was mediocre at best and i use my q batteries (slim) in the q9c)
    -internal gps
    -better keyboard by far

It was well worth the upgrade for me. You could choose to buy batteries off ebay or other sites. I had 3 backup batteries for my q that cost 5-10 each off ebay and they still work perfectly fine in my q9c. Another note, I sanded down (dremel) my q desktop charger to fit my q9c with slim battery/door. The slot doesn't look pretty but the phone covers it.

To my mind, there is no question the Q9c out-performs the Q1. Everything from the keyboard to OS just works better.

    ....my $.02

robotphood: regarding ebay and batteries-- I know u can't recommend (or advertise) sites in the forum but could you tell me which seller you purchased these inexpensive batteries from that have endured. I'm a RARE ebay'er and I read reviews before buying; but a direct recommendation would be great. PM if nec. Thanks!!!

Also, any of the Q9c users on Verizon? Any pitfalls i should watch out for? And do you think i will have the same problem w/ 1x-EV switching? I think that's not related to my current silver Q -- but signal interference in my area; but just verifying that

    Thanks.

I wonder why the video review on Cnet mentions the keyboard as a negative? Saying it was stiff and hard to press keys. Seems like you all here love the keyboard. I liked the looks of it.

The GPS sounds nice but not a selling pt for me since i have already have. You still need to subscribe to VZ nav right?

Thanks for everyone's help! It looks like I will get the Q9C in a few weeks with my new contract with Verizon. Since I sync with Vista and Outlook, is there anything I need to do to the new phone to disable the old one and sync the new one??

Probably not. Just in case though, you might want to end the partnership with your old phone and then make a partnership with your new one. It probably won't matter though.

    Former Q owner/Current Q9C owner.

I am one of the ones that wholeheartedly bashed WinMobile 6.0 when I first saw it on another device.
Then I got a Q9C. The fact alone that it remembers your recently used email addresses like Outlook does, alone is worth the upgrade. lol
Then add 6.1 with the super slick panel interface? I couldn't imagine going back to my old Q.
Although my old Q was ROCK SOLID, it iis totally beat to snot and still worked perfectly til the day I ditched it. It served me well, but the 9C really is a generation ahead in pretty much every way.
Battery life, better keyboard, Win 6.1, Youtube out of the box (with 6.1).

Windows Media Player still sucks, though. ;)

    no need to
    mine is off
it actually knows your contacts email addresses

so all you do it type the name of a contact (that has an email address) and it starts to pull up the list
