Hack for how often the phone checks for new towers or reception?

I went into AT&T I have a Motorola Q9h and they told me that if I switched my band selection from 3G to 850/1950 which is EDGE network that I would save battery life on my Q significantly and still be able to get the same amount of reception. Well I did do that and my battery now always goes over 1 day without dropping a bar. However, if there is a hack to stop the phone from checking for a new signal so often that would also help battery life I assume. Let me know if anyone knows of such a thing. Thank you

Actually most people change it to make it check towers MORE.
I did. The reason is the less you poll the slower your phone will ring when you get a call.
My phone, which is Sprint, is at the 2nd fastest poll and it takes 3 rings before the phone will ring.

    Look into Slot Cycle.
