Can't do that yet, until we get Mango update.

Well, even with Mango you cannot do it. It'll require third party apps in conjunction with Mango. I've got Mango and I'm not able to setup my personal ringtones. To set up your own ringtones will not be the same as the way you currently set custom ringtones on Windows Phone. Kind of odd that they make you rely on a third party app.

How does mango require you to use a 3rd party app? Unless you mean to trim something down to under 39 seconds? That first link of yours takes you to what is basically a guide on how to make a custom ringtone in WP7 Mango.

I have custom ringtone on my Trophy (on Mango). I just had to convert a song to WMA and then trim the 39 seconds. Then on zune, change property of the trimmed clip to Ringtone and sybc with phone.
    Thats it.
On the phone, settings>Ringtone>select the custom ringtone.
    Hope this helps.
