Geeeeezzzzzzz, Bob...You give up your age - I figured I may have been one of the few IT guys here that even knew what Windows for Workgroups was. I remember the excitement going to 32 bit!! Hehehe...

he claims he was on the internet

but it really doesnt matter anymore as i cant even log on to his PC anymore
its an endless cycle of logging on and forced to log off:frown:

i have to find an external case and hook up his drive that way

LOL....yeah..I'm soon to be 44. No big deal. Had grey hair since I was 35, now there's just a lot more of it.

Started with TRS-80's in high school and been going ever since...have been around mainframes to a minor degree, IBM Token Ring, Banyan, FDDI, GigE, Novel, Windows since version 286, etc.. Archie, Gopher, Bitnet, etc.. I could go on and on, as can anybody who's been in the biz for a while.

Now here's the scary part. I'm not an "IT guy", at least not by formal training. :2cool:

find as in lying around the office or purchase?

If puchase, I think places like USBgear.com have several cases that take an internal drive and turn it into a USB connected external

    find as in buy

my boss picked one up yesterday
Dell told me it was a PATA drive and to get a case for that...but i dont think its right
the connection doesnt even look close and its way to big (he got a 2.5")

i think the Dell Latitude D420 drive is a 1.8" drive...

Sounds like you are having all kinds of fun. You should send out a memo that Porn should not be watched on company computers, that should raise some hackles. Although I wouldnt go in looking for a pay raise after that :tounge:

they've sent out those memos here...along with everything you do on your IP is logged, anything you do that raises any question will trigger a review of that log, etc...

BOTH are always, year after year, at or near the top of the Best of the best. ZA would have to be my first pick in its category. AVG I'm partial too because their database updates are based more on European threats first which is more times than not where most malware emanates. imho :) -Q

I believe this is what my company uses:

    http://us.trendmicro.com/us/home/

Thats about all the input I can give on this subject seeing as I just use AVG free adition at home.

Both are outstanding product. I use ZA Personal Edition on every PC I own. For years I even ran it at work, even tho it was behind the corporate firewall, but when other people got viruses from email attachments which spread on netshares and such, I never did. If it weren't for the fact that they change/add servers so much and don't tell anyone, I'd still use it there.

Experiences with AVG are the free edition prouct as well. Set it up with my sister who is too poor (her words) to pay for internet security, so at least she's got AVG on email. Much faster and less obtrusive than Norton.

Extrapolating from the free editions to the paid editions, they should be stellar products at a very reasonable price. Additionally, they both consistently win awards as reader's choice, best of show, etc.

I think those are good choices hockey....

I do not know how the ZA IS 09 works, but you may want to see/ask before purchasing if you can set up one PC with everything you want...all named ranges, all program exclusions, alert settings, etc... and then copy that config somehow to all the other machines. It would be painful entering in that information for XX numbers of computers.

luckily we dont have THAT many computers (8 total)
they both appear to be pretty similar..i guess it comes down to ease of use and price
ZA is about 500 bucks cheaper for a 2 year subscription than AVG for 10 PC's (you can get 3 5 or 10 licenses) so i would get 10 in hopes of expansion

    thanks for you opinion guys

    Time to go a'troubleshooting.....

I would take your external drive to another computer and see if the problems follow you there.

If so, sounds like the start of a hardware error on the drive, or potentially a driver problem *if* the drive needs a driver in any way.

If not, try transferring it to a different USB port on a different peripheral. If for example, it's plugged into your PC, try plugging into your monitor. Try a powered USB hub and make sure the connection is getting enough power. Try a different cable. Trying taking another USB device, such as a thimb drive, another external, etc and plug it into the same USB port and see if the problems occur. If so, sounds like a port problem in which case moving to another one may make it all better.
