Active Sync - OTA vs USB

I use Active Sync to sync over the air to an Exchange server. Initially that worked fine. Then I installed Active Sync on my laptop and had files and media synced to my Moto q via USB. While connected via USB the Sync worked fine but once I disconnected it the over the air sync no longer worked. It would try but just time out and say server could not be found, it may just be a temporary network problem. Do I have something setup wrong or can I not use OTA and USB together?

It seems like once I've connected to Active Sync via USB it only trys that connection, even when not connected. It will try to sync for 5 mins then give me "The server could not be reached." Error Code: 0x80072EE2. If I reset my phone and only set up Active Sync on the phone the OTA works fine until I connect it to my laptop again.
