iSkoot a great alternative to Skype mobile

    http://www.iskoot.com/skype.php

I found posts that mention this app but no exclusive threads for it.

Basically, it does everything that Skype mobile does, except it only uses a tiny amount of data. When making a call from your Q to one of your skype contacts (voice chat) it will count against your voice mins instead of data. Why is this better when many of us subscribe to unlimited data plans, you ask? Well in my experience skype mobile requires an enourmous amount of data to get a decent voice chat connection. Skype mobile constantly cuts in and out and I always gets logged off. With iSkoot, as long as you don't get a dropped call, you will never get disconnected from a voice chat. The claimed "tiny amount of data" comes from sending a message and updating your contact's status.

Oh... and did I mention that it's freeware???

Yah I havent found an app that incorporates skype along with the other messengers. Let me know if you find a good one.

I've been real disappointed with the Skype client for WM6.1 (I do a lot of skypeout calls), so I installed fring, and the skypout call quality in fring is excellent. It also connects to a lot of other services (yahoo, msn, aim, orkut, twitter, etc.) Like iskoot, it is free.

Thanks for that link. I tried it out. I didn't like the way it handled skype calls. Though voice quality was okay, I couldn't figure out how to take it off speakerphone. Is there an option? I don't want the whole room listening in to my conversation.

They have added the ability to switch to the internal mic on some devices, but not the Q yet. I use my BT when I am making skypeout calls, and the call quality is outstanding.

One downside to fring that I have noticed is that they have builds for many different OS', and the WM build seems to lag at times when it comes to features being implemented. But for the one thing I need most right now, skypeout calls, it has been the best that I have found.

I do like the file transfer feature. Didn't get a chance to try it out though. I would not say that voice quality is excellent on speakerphone on Fring. I can see how it might be better with a headset but I don't like wearing a BT headset when I don't need to. It bothers me. I'd rather hold the phone to my ear. LOL! I'll stick with iSkoot for skype.
