welcome to our happy family!
while you are trying to connect your phone, is the cable connected directly to the laptop or through a hub? and do you have a firewall running? if the cable is not directly connected that can prevent your phone from syncing. and a firewall will as well (unless you set it to allow active sync connections).
and what is the OS on your laptop?

the operating system of your computer. (i.e. if you are using windows Vista you need to use Windows Mobile Device center instead of Active Sync)

try going (in your phone) to start > settings > connections > usb to PC, and unchecking the "enable advaned network functionality" box. this has worked for some in the past.
