Tried that before, tried it again. Changes the icon, doesn't change the text when typing, except w/alt key mode, it does work.

Have never done a master reset. I'm fairly computer literate but phones seem to throw me a bit. It's not like I can put a new hard drive in and be up and running in 10 minutes.

ok, so since you have never done a master reset I will give you the same warning here. Its going to be a very simple process however by doing this everything in your cellphone will be set to factory defaults. Meaning you will lose everything on your phone unless you back it up. Search through here for some contact backups and comeback then well go through the next step.
