Tehtering w/o tethering plan via usb on 6.1 (ATT)

Ok, break out your favorite mobile reg editor and locate:

    HKLM\Comm\InternetSharing\Settings

In here will be a value named "ForceCellConnection"

Change "ATT ICS" to "" and reboot.

ICS will now allow you to choose either ATT ICS or MEdia. ATT ICS will not work without a tethering plan on your wireless account, but MEdia Net will work as long as you have the signal and the basic pay-as-you-go feature (not recommended).

ATT ICS uses "isp.cingular" (tethering) whereas MEdia Net uses "wap.cingular" (general internet).

Also, the ATT ICS and MEdia Net entries in the connection settings dialog are read only and won't let you edit them, But if you navigate to:

    HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Providers\{7C4B7A38-5FF7-4...}\Connections

There will be 2 keys in there. one for ATT ICS and MEdia Net. In those keys there will be a value of ReadOnly. Change the value for these from 1 to 0 and reboot your phone. These connections should now be editable.

This post was made via tether w/o plan and via USB connection

UNLIMITED DATA PLAN IS HIGHLEY RECOMMENDED!!

THESE REGISTRY EDITS WILL NOT GIVE YOU FREE INTERNET!!

I may be an Idiot for asking this, but, by doing this, if you have the Media Max, does AT&T see the data as if it were going to the phone? Or does it recognize it being passed on to another device...? *Hides from all the flames that will ensue*

I saw that Forceconnection entry while looking over the entries (I looked at virtually all of them), but since it had an entry, I didn't know what just deleting it would be, if anything. Good deal.

Rebooting, will try now, thanks bud.

But does this show up under Media Max usage? I.e. can we use this free w/o the tethering plan?

ATT see's your phone accessing it's network, not your PC. What would concern them is the amount of data being transmitted over a period of time. They have internal audit ppl that look at accounts that have been flagged by the system for things like this. If your accessing alot of data and using alot of bandwidth on a mobile device in a relatively short period of time, the only explanation would be that your tethering.

If your tethering without a plan, stay away from things like downloading large files... thats a dead give-away right there and trying to use it for online gaming etc.. basically things that are going to be fairly data intensive. Stick with minor web browsing maybe the occasional small download and stay away from sites that are gfx heavy. Don't use it all the time and don't use multiple browser windows either...that will greatly lessen your chances of being "caught", but thats not to say that being caught isn't a possibility at all...

...and GET an unlimited data plan
