This is a discussion on Tehtering w/o tethering plan via usb on 6.1 (ATT) within the Moto Q 9h forums, part of the Motorola category; Originally Posted by mexiken It works !!!! I'm tethering right now on ICS on a Media Max plan as well ...
Tehtering just means that your using your phone as a router or modem of sorts to access the internet or network with a PC.
And the point to this is, that in WM 6.0 you could use the ICS application on your phone to tether via MEdia Net (general internet) without a tethering plan. In 6.1, ATT has tried to force ppl into tethering plans by (horribly) trying to place some registry entry forcing ICS to use the tethering only connection which won't allow you access without a tethering plan on your wireless account.
In other words, ATT tried to take it away, but we took it back![]()

Put it this way:
1KB = $.01
1MB = $10.00
10MB = $100.00
and you can very easily surpass that 10MB via tethering on a pay-per-use feature at $.01 per KB. Thats not a bill I would like to pay. I've surpassed the 10MB mark just surfing on my phone in a couple of hours!
Definitely want a real plan.. either MEdia Max (unlimited internet/unlimited txt/mms) or the PDA Personal Bundle (unlimited internet/200 txt/mms) either of those are around $35... alot better than and extra $100 or so lol
If they have your Globals IMEI as the phone on your account, then they will not give you the MEdia Max and you will have to choose the PDA Personal... However, if you did not update your IMEI with them, and the old one is not a Smart or PDA phone, you can probably get away with the MEdia Max.
If you do alot of txt'ing, you can get the PDA Personal Bundle w/unlimited txt/mms.. but I believe that one is around $50..

I've been tethering via BT without this hack. Is this basically the same thing except via usb? How do I actually tether via usb? Is there an app in windows folder or something?
Update: NM I figured out which file it is.
Ok so this is not working for me. When I connect (in ICS in start menu) using media net, status says 'connected' on my phone. But on my laptop it says it only has a 'local' connection. Not connected to the internet. Vista installed necessary drivers. What am I missing?

Ok, all I did was start the ICS app, selected MEdia Net then connected the phone to the PC via USB... windows automatically installed drivers for a new ICS Device and once that was done, the ICS on the phone automatically connected... I didn't ahve to do anything other then the registry edit. This was on XP Pro SP3 so I am not sure about vista.
