Custom Ringtones in Windows Phone Confirmed For Mango Release

Just hours after we published a short guide on how to setup custom ringtones in Windows Phone 7, there comes word that you’ll be able to add assorted ringtones to your phone in Mango. The process to use custom ringtones in Mango will change requiring you use a third party app.  With that you’ll be able to  create a ringtone on your PC and have it set up on your Windows Phone. To date, you’ve been limited to the 30 ringtones that come with Windows Phone. There won’t be changes to how you update ringtones in Windows Phone, unless you are using your own ringtones.

The update will require your ringtone meets the following criteria.

  • 39 seconds or shorter
  • smaller than 1 megabyte (MB)
  • saved in MP3 or WMA format
  • not copy-protected (i.e. DRM free)
